To be clear, it is many a year since I have tried to do this and I can't remember why/what/outcome, but depending on the "value" of the files I would definitely be looking into it. This is where data recovery software might be able to recover them. Whilst they wouldn't have been visible to you they might not have been actually deleted, just the table of contents has been deleted not the files. Probably too late now, outside of professional recovery ( expensive ) but it might have been possible to recover those lost files, or most of them with free software. Unfortunately it seems that I hadn`t fully backed up my "wonky" drive to that other drive so I seem to have lost loads of documents and photos. I seem to have managed to restore the size of the drive, and am now copying stuff back onto the newly enlarged drive from another hard drive.
